A Toronto Chinatown grocer and his two co-accused have been found not guilty on charges of assault and forcible confinement.

David Chen, his cousin and his nephew were all charged in the case, which received national attention when it was discovered the trio were arrested after catching a thief who tried to steal from their store.

经过历时17个月的缠讼后，陈旺等人对法院做出的不起诉判决表示满意。昨日听到法官宣读判决结果后，他的脸上展现出难得的笑容，并回到店中开香槟酒庆贺。

谈到在此事件中最大的体会，陈旺说，华人的声音是很微弱的，但即使是民族性上不善于表达意见，只要能够聚集多数人的力量，就会受到重视，这从此次汇集了各界的支持所凝结的力量就可证明。

陈旺还说，华人超市遭窃情况十分严重。就在前一天（28日），他所经营的金牛城超市仍有三起窃盗案件发生，陈旺对窃案之频繁及窃贼之猖狂感到无奈。陈旺表示，这次法庭判决结果虽然不能直接杜绝窃案的发生，但至少可以对窃贼起到某种阻遏作用，同时让商家知道自己的生命财产是受到保护的。

涉案的惯窃贝纳特（Anthony Bennett），目前因其它窃案仍在服刑中。当陈旺被问到如果贝纳特出狱后又回金牛城超市偷窃，会做出何种处置时，陈旺回答说，今后会对所有的窃案采取更谨慎的行动。

在法院结束审理之后，陈旺等人做的第一件事，就是回到位于中区华埠他所经营的金牛城超市，继续打理生意。但由于不断有一以来给予支持的社区人士前往道贺，陈旺最终亦开香槟酒表示庆贺。

陈旺进一步表示，此案件在审理过程中，受到来自社团、地方、及社会大众相当多的帮助及鼓励。往后将会更积极得加入社区活动，为地方人士提供服务。
很有可能将来会参与民意代表的选举，以更直接的方式回馈大众。

是的，Thanks for your concern,
I quoted your comments to the people who orgernized the supporting activities.

I was asking myself, sitting in the court, if this was the first time, that support from the Chinese Communities weighed a lot in this case, but I heard the Judge actually not so happy about the strong support from Chinese society, which mostly consist of Fijian Associations Confederation, Toronto.

As people told me, many of them ( Retailer Owners ) fear to call the police, or even called, the slow response cause the owner nervous to handle the "stealer". Yet, key issue here is for "how long, can you keep ’shop-lifters‘, waiting for police, and in which way that you could keep them captured" -that's the argument.

Hopefully, some new term may ink it clearer for people to act, so to pro vent the similar cases happen in future.

As "Stop thief“ is worldwide slogan, not mentioning the harsh punishments within few cultures, but no civilized allows disrespects of private interests and your stuffs to be stolen!

So, this might impact politicians in the Parliament, that the relevant law term No 491 would be amended as well. It's the law's responsibility of making that clear black and white? Right?

General people take this as a victory of Strong media and social support which the Judge is not willing to see. However, it's clear, and visible for Chinese, and all those small business doers to understand that the retailing owners of all kinds hates this kind of daily thefts around streets.

Let's build Canada a safe land, but not the kingdom of thefts!
